Score: 3/5 - Hey, This Kinda Slaps

Sludge/Doom Metal · October 23rd, 2026 · Self released

Are you looking for a slow, meandering, pensive Metal experience that doesn’t ask much of your time or energy? If the answer is “yes”, then look no further than Beneath A Sky That Breaks from Blood of the Earth! With only five tracks clocking in at 20 minutes, you can enjoy a blend of Doom, Death, and Hardcore Metal with solid production value that doesn’t sound sterile or washed out.

Four of the five tracks are original, with the fifth song acting as a bonus track, which is a cover of “Filth Pig” by Ministry. I found the cover enjoyable, with its deep bass, simple drums, crunchy guitar, and electronic elements. It’s mostly stripped back and to the point, but keeps you interested throughout. The title track is a good listen, but sadly the vocals are drowned out by the instruments. I did enjoy the audio panning between the left and right toward the end of the track, which gave it an almost 360 audio effect. “The Constellation” reminded me of Lacuna Coil, and “Barren Oasis” incorporated a piano piece that leads into a quick soulful guitar solo that helped give the song more of an identity. Finally, “Petrichor” might be the most Doom Metal track on the EP. As I listened, it occasionally reminded me of the main theme from the video game Hades (one of my all-time favorite games. Check it out!).

Beneath A Sky That Breaks doesn’t reinvent the genre, but not every release needs to. It’s a pretty straightforward EP with not too many extra frills or thrills, but that doesn’t make it any less enjoyable! It’s worth checking out, especially at only 20 minutes long. There’s no excuse to not give it a listen!
